Despite WNMU getting its first points at the 11:35 mark of the first half and scoring its first field goal at 11:17, the Mustangs came out strong in the second half to overpower the Hawaii Pacific University Sea Warriors, 73-57, at home on Saturday night. The Mustangs improve to 6-5 overall; whereas, the Sea Warriors fall to 3-6 on the season.
Senior Casey Crevelone (Tucson, AZ/CDO High School) (Tucson, AZ) led all scorers with 25 points, his season-best thus far. He hit 9-of-11 from the field and was on fire from behind the arc, nailing 7-of-9 shots.
Defensively, the game belonged to sophomore DJ Nicholas (Glendale, AZ/Glendale High School) (Glendale, AZ). He brought down 14 rebounds and blocked nine shots. He currently leads the RMAC this season with most blocks in one single game. He averages 1.82 blocks per game, good for the second spot in the RMAC.
The Sea Warriors jumped out to a 13-0 lead before Justin Williams (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise Valley High School) (Phoenix, AZ) sank two free throws to put the Mustangs on the board with 11:35 left in the first half. WNMU then went on a 17-3 to take the lead for the first time in the game.
The Sea Warriors went on a run of their own, 9-2, to close out the half. HPU was up at halftime, 25-19.
The Mustangs could not regain the lead until midway through the second half. The momentum began to swing in favor of WNMU after an offensive rebound and a dunk by Nicholas. Crevelone then drilled back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead for good.
Crevelone sealed the victory with another three triples in a row.
The Mustangs shot a poor 20.8% from the field in the first half but then hit 19-of-30 shots in the second (63.3%). HPU shot 32.7% overall.
HPU's Jason Curtis and Rishi Kakad finished the game with 14 points a piece.
